THE PROJECT MANAGER
This year, Kirstin is our Project manager. She is doing a great job coordinating and managing all the different departments needs and requests. In her own words, her job is to oversee everyone’s great work!
The Editorial team is responsible for sourcing the text of The New Road, scanning it, and OCR-ing it (OCR stands for ‘optical character recognition’, to convert images of text into characters). Once we have the text, we can begin editing the proofs and start our role as ‘grammar police’. However, before we start editing, we have to write the House Style so that everything in the book is consistent. As we go through our edits, we also have to compile a list of words for the glossary. The success of this project depends on teamwork, so we also collaborate with different departments in order to produce information, such as the A.I. sheet, author biography, and design briefs.
ADVERTISING, MARKETING AND DISTRIBUTION DEPARTMENT
Marketing’s main job is to conduct market research, which will inform all the production decisions that will be made about the book, because it needs to be targeted to its market to succeed. It’s our job to contact contributors to write forewords. Our other important job is to publicise the book, such as working with Production and Editorial departments in producing the A.I. sheet. Finally, we get to organise the big launch at the end of the project.
PRODUCTION AND DESIGN DEPARTMENT
In the Production and Design team, we are responsible for the cover and inner page designs – basically, making things look good! We are responsible for contacting illustrators and writing the design briefs for them alongside the Editorial team. We are working on page set up at the moment, trying out different fonts, styles, and margins for the inner pages. We have to work with the Marketing department in order to decide which design is best for our target market. We also have to work out the extent of the book so that the Rights and Finance department can get an accurate printer estimate.
RIGHTS AND FINANCE DEPARTMENT
The Rights and Finance team is responsible for the overall budget of the project – and making sure everyone sticks to it. We have to liaise with the other departments, especially with Editorial and with Production, so that we can get accurate printer quotes based on the number of pages and the size and format of the book. We also write contracts for our contributors.
ONLINE AND DIGITAL DEPARTMENT
The Online and Digital department is responsible for setting up the website, twitter and facebook profiles for the book, and keeping them updated. We also help the group to organise and stay in contact by setting up an email list and creating accounts for the online programmes we use. We will also work with the Production and Design team to create the e-book version of The New Road. We are always on the lookout for new content for our website, and plan to add more information about the book and the author, paintings by our illustrator, short readings, blogs, and other interesting content.
